Hello, world! Welcome to SuperCombo.gg, the (new) home of competitive fighting games. While there’s a lot of new content to offer here, there’s also a lot of FGC history preserved here. Let’s talk about who we are and what we do.

On EVO, Shoryuken, and RTS

You may have heard that the joint venture between Sony and RTS purchased EVO. The press releases did not initially signal this but the overall Shoryuken brand was acquired in the purchase of EVO. One of the immediate decisions following that purchase was to lock the Shoryuken Forums until a future for the site could be planned out. The Shoryuken Wiki operated independently during that time. In October, a decision was reached to legally separate the contents of the Forums and Wiki sites so that they may be migrated for preservation and development. This is what lead to the establishment of the SuperCombo.gg website and name to serve as a home for the contents. We’d like to thank Tom Cannon and Zach D. (aka Preppy) for reaching out and collaborating with us on the journey that has lead to this day.

What we do

SuperCombo consists of the following services:

  • SuperCombo’s new front page with the mission of preserving and expanding on the history of the FGC.
  • SuperCombo Forums, a new forum community.
  • The SuperCombo Wiki, the new home of the Shoryuken Wiki with all of the same content.
  • The Shoryuken Wiki Editor’s Discord is now the general SuperCombo Discord server.

The team behind this new name is a mix of old and new faces, primarily people involved in operating the Shoryuken Wiki prior to the name change. We’ve taken a lot of feedback from long-time users and people involved in the FGC who did not use Shoryuken. It is our hope to create a space that will last and help preserve and connect the fighting game community with permanence.

Preserving FGC history

Launching alongside our new services are a few initiatives for the preservation of FGC history. Our From The Archives series of articles starts with commonly-requested interviews and informative articles by Mauve, Jason Moses, Luis H Garcia, and Heidi “Zero-chan” Kemps. These articles were only available via the Internet Archive and we reached out to the authors to produce authorized re-prints so that they are easily accessible to the modern internet. Moving forward we’d like to invite anyone who wrote fighting game-related articles on defunct sites to reach out and let us publish it through the From The Archives initiative. Our editor inbox is [email protected].

Second, it was always the intention to provide permanent access to the Shoryuken Forums which were at risk of being closed way back in 2018. Today, we have the Shoryuken Forum Archive available at archive.supercombo.gg. This backup site contains every post made as of 9/28/2021. Because we needed to keep the cost of operating this gargantuan forum low in order to ensure its longevity, it was placed in read-only mode so that a new forum could be created that is resource-efficient. Register today or sign in with your Twitter or Discord at forums.supercombo.gg and take part in our new community.

What comes next?

If you were already using the Wiki, it’s business as usual. For the Forums, it’s a new start! You’ll need to make a new account and there are new forum categories to participate in. The SuperCombo Forums FAQ thread compiles all the information you may wish to know. As for news, you can expect a focus on pieces exploring the many different facets of the FGC instead of mundane reporting. New interviews and discussion articles are already on the way! You can look forward to new additions to Andrea Demetrio’s excellent series of articles highlighting indie fighting games to debut first on SuperCombo.gg. If you’re an old head or fresh face, we invite you to take part in everything we have built.

Your support counts

SuperCombo.gg is run by volunteers and is completely ad-free. This means we pay out of pocket for every expense out of a dedication to the scene, and we’ve revamped our Patreon supporter program to coincide with the launch. Any subscription to the GBL Patreon earns you a cosmetic Discord role in our official server and also provides you access to our Patron Lounge forum. The upper tiers of perks include shout-outs in our articles and front page website.

A message from our founders

SuperCombo.gg represents the greatest achievement this year in an effort to improve the infrastructure of the fighting game community. When I became involved in improving community resources, it became immediately clear how dire the situation had been for years prior to being interested in helping out. I feel an immense weight lifted from my shoulders in posting this article today. I look forward to enjoying playing fighting games with the community behind what we’ve built here.

When the opportunity to work on the SRK Wiki presented itself, we knew we had to help make things better. Our goal is to continue the legacy of our predecessor while striving to become the home of competitive fighting games. This is our commitment. This is SuperCombo.gg.
